Ronald J Mertz passed away at his daughter's and son-in-law's house on January 5, 2018 in Fort Lupton, Colorado at the age of 73 years old.
Ron was born to John and Sylvia (Klingbile) Mertz on May 4, 1944 in Granite Falls, Minnesota. He spent some time playing on the farm and getting into things that he wasn't supposed to do. He always curious and wanted to see how things worked. Growing up he earned the Nick Name of Butch. He was the middle child of 5 siblings, 2 older sisters and 2 younger brothers.

Ron was born to John and Sylvia (Klingbile) Mertz on May 4, 1944 in Granite Falls, Minnesota. He spent some time playing on the farm and getting into things that he wasn't supposed to do. He always curious and wanted to see how things worked. Growing up he earned the Nick Name of Butch. He was the middle child of 5 siblings, 2 older sisters and 2 younger brothers.
His family moved to Aurora, Colorado in 1955, where he grew up most of his life. At one point he went to the job core in California to precede training as a mechanic. When he completed Job Core he came back to Colorado where he met the Love of his wife Barbara Miller. They met at the roller skating rink one night in 1967 and been together ever since.
Ron and Barbara married on September 7, 1968 at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Commerce city, Colorado. They enjoyed camping, fishing, country dancing and gambling up at Central City, Colorado over the years.
He got hired on at RTD as a bus washer working graveyards for the first couple of years of his and Barbara's marriage. He eventually worked his way up to a mechanic and eventually an inspector. He worked for RTD for 29 years before retiring where his wife and he traveled once in a while to see the sites.
Ron joined the Eagles and Elk Club and spent many evenings there over the past couple of years. He enjoyed meeting new people and playing bingo every once in a while.
Ron is survived by his daughter Michelle (Loren) Pendland in Fort Lupton, Colorado, 3 grandchildren Jacob Opel (Liz) in Denver, Colorado, Rachel Opel (Chris) Denver, Colorado, and Shelby Opel (David) Denver, Colorado. 5 Great grandchildren Zayden, Analycia, Damian, Ariana, and Allixandria.
Catherine (John) Richardson in Thornton, Colorado and Shantel (Joey) Rogers, Duluth, Georgia who were like his daughters as well.
2 sisters Lola Jean (Jim) Bird in Thornton, Colorado, Sandra Mertz in Pocatello, Idaho, 2 brothers Mike Mertz in Denver Colorado and Nico Clemente (Joan) in Florida. He has many nephews, Nieces, great nieces and great nephews. He had many friends and neighbors that would come and visit him often.
He is proceeded in death by his wife Barbara Mertz, His parents John and Sylvia Mertz, sister Constance Mertz, Father/mother-in-law Harvey and Leona Miller and his 2 sister-in-laws Carol James and Connie Lamaon.


A funeral service for Ronald will be held Thursday, January 18, 2018 at 10:00 AM at Olinger Highland Chapel, 10201 Grant Street, Thornton, Colorado 80229. A burial will occur at Olinger Hampden Cemetery, 8600 East Hampden Ave, Denver, CO 80231.
